The Cluster Hub “Production of Raw Materials for Batteries from European Resources” successfully hosted the third edition of its annual workshop on 12 December 2024. This key event brought together 19 project representatives to showcase groundbreaking advancements in the production of raw materials for batteries, covering the entire value chain — from raw materials mining to recycling.
The workshop served as a vital platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange among experts and stakeholders across Europe. Representatives provided valuable insights into the most promising technologies driving the development of sustainable and efficient battery raw materials, aligning with Europe’s broader goals for clean energy and resource independence.
The RESPECT project was presented by the project coordinator, Justo Garcia (Orano), and WP3 leader, Benjamin Wilson (Aalto University). They shared the project’s preliminary findings on hydrometallurgical recycling, focusing specifically on the leaching performance of black mass, a crucial material derived from spent lithium-ion batteries.
RESPECT’s contribution extended beyond its presentation as the team actively engaged in the technical panel discussion on "Advanced Recycling Solutions for Battery Material Recovery and Reuse", addressing some of the pressing challenges faced by the battery recycling industry. The discussion particularly emphasised the hurdles in scaling up operations, such as the limited availability of black mass and other essential raw materials, which are critical for ensuring a steady and efficient recycling process.
The third annual Cluster Hub workshop reaffirmed the importance of collaboration across projects, industries, and research communities in tackling Europe’s resource challenges. By fostering innovative solutions and encouraging dialogue, events like these continue to drive progress toward a sustainable, circular battery value chain.
