On 7 April 2025, science and technology students at Kulosaari Secondary School (Kulosaaren yhteiskoulu, KSYK) had the opportunity to attend a lecture by Benjamin Wilson from Aalto University on circular economy and sustainability.
The lecture aimed to showcase the RESPECT project, alongside other initiatives exploring the circular economy and how research can support current and future European Green Transition goals, particularly in the areas of batteries and critical raw materials.
University-level research topics related to the circular economy were presented and discussed, including battery recycling, the use of secondary waste resources, and electrochemical techniques. The session highlighted the importance of sustainability as a balance between environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Students also learned about the significance of both reusing and recycling various materials, such as production scraps, end-of-life batteries, and industrial waste streams, and how these practices can help reduce reliance on raw material mining.

Within this context, the RESPECT project was presented as a leading example of innovation in the field. Its use of low-CO₂ hydrometallurgical processes and direct recycling methods was emphasised as essential to exceeding current European targets for battery-related metals. The project also contributes to the ongoing discussion on life-cycle assessment as a tool to evaluate the environmental impact of battery components and electric vehicle production as a whole. This knowledge empowers future consumers to make informed choices regarding the environmental consequences of their purchases.
